Demon Shax (also Chax, Shan, Shass, Shaz, Scox) is a demon that appears in demonology and in grimoires as the Ars Goetia (part of The Lesser Key of Solomon). My image is from the Occult Tarot by Travis McHenry.
He is a Great Marquis of Hell and, for some, a Duke. He commands a considerable number of legions of demons, often mentioned as thirty. He is depicted as a stork that speaks with a husky, subtle voice. He changes to a beautiful voice once he has entered a summoning triangle.
Powers and Abilities
Shax possesses several abilities, although he is said to be a great liar and deceives whoever summons him. This is unless he is forced into a magical triangle, where he will then speak “wonderfully” and tell the truth. His powers include:
- Theft: He can steal money from kings and houses, returning it after 1,200 years (or taking it to wherever the caster wishes). He is also said to be able to steal horses and anything the caster asks.
- Perception: He can take away the sight, hearing, and understanding of anyone at the caster’s will.
- Discovery of Hidden Things: He is capable of discovering hidden things, unless they are protected by spirits.
In Popular Culture
He appears in the television series “Charmed“. Is a particularly powerful demon and is remembered for being the one who, in one timeline, killed one of the main characters, Prue Halliwell. This makes him one of the most significant and feared demons within the series’ universe.
